Overview

This Maasai Mara safari 3 days itinerary gets you into Kenya's most celebrated wildlife reserve with no wasted time. Depart Nairobi early on Day 1, stop at the Great Rift Valley viewpoint for sweeping views across the valley floor, and arrive in the Mara in time for a sunset game drive across 1,510 square kilometres of open savannah. The Maasai Mara National Reserve is regarded as Kenya's premier wildlife destination — resident populations of lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, and buffalo make Big Five sightings a realistic expectation on every game drive, not just a lucky encounter.

Day 2 is the centrepiece: a full day inside the reserve targeting the Big Five, with the option to drive all the way to the Mara River. The Mara River is the stage for the Great Wildebeest Migration, one of the world's most dramatic wildlife spectacles, when over 1.5 million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebra pour across from the Serengeti in Tanzania — a sight that peaks between July and October. Year-round, the riverbanks hold enormous pods of hippos and some of the largest concentrations of Nile crocodiles in East Africa, making the river a rewarding stop in any season.

Day 3 returns to Nairobi at a comfortable pace, with an optional stop at a traditional Maasai village for a cultural encounter before lunch on the road. Guaranteed daily departures and small groups of up to seven make this one of the most accessible and personal ways to experience the Mara.

  • Guaranteed daily departures — solo travellers can book and the trip will not be cancelled

Your 3-Day Maasai Mara Safari

  • Day
    01

    Nairobi to Maasai Mara

Your guide picks you up from your Nairobi hotel or JKIA at 8:00 a.m. and you set out southwest through the Rift Valley. The road crests at the Great Rift Valley viewpoint, where you stop to look across one of the planet's most dramatic landscapes — a 6,000 km geological tear in the African continent, with the dormant volcanoes of Mt. Suswa and Mt. Longonot rising from the valley floor. Arrive at your Mara camp in time for lunch. At 4:00 p.m., depart for a two-hour sunset game drive through the Mara Reserve. Lions and big cats become active in the cooler late-afternoon hours, and the golden light is ideal for photography. Return to camp by 6:00 p.m. for a buffet dinner and overnight.

    02

Full Day in Maasai Mara — Mara River

After breakfast at 7:00 a.m., spend the entire day inside the Maasai Mara in pursuit of the Big Five. Your guide navigates the reserve's western grasslands, riverine woodland, and open plains, tracking lion prides, stalking cheetahs, and locating elephant herds in the thickets. From July to October, the route extends to the Mara River — the crossing point where the annual Great Wildebeest Migration reaches its peak spectacle, with columns of wildebeest leaping from the banks into croc-infested water to reach Kenyan grazing grounds. Year-round, the Mara River banks host the reserve's largest hippo pods and some of the biggest Nile crocodile concentrations anywhere in Africa. Enjoy a picnic lunch inside the reserve and continue game viewing through the afternoon before returning to camp for dinner and overnight.
