Overview

This Serengeti Ngorongoro safari 3 days itinerary delivers Tanzania's two greatest wildlife destinations in the shortest possible window — ideal for travellers with limited time who want substance, not a drive-by. Two nights, two parks, two of Africa's most extraordinary game-viewing environments.

The Serengeti is 14,750 km² of open savannah that has been one of the world's great wildlife ecosystems for over 3 million years. The landscape is defined by the open Serengeti plains, the kopjes — ancient granite rock outcrops that rise from the grassland and serve as platforms for leopards and cheetahs — and the rivers that cut through the park and concentrate wildlife during the dry season. The Serengeti holds the Big Five year-round: elephant herds, multiple resident lion prides, leopards in the kopje zone, buffalo, and black rhinos. The Great Wildebeest Migration moves through the ecosystem continuously — in the southern Serengeti's Ndutu plains during the calving season (January–March), through the central corridor in April–June, along the western Grumeti River in June–July, and into Kenya's Maasai Mara in July–October before returning south. The timing of your visit determines where in this cycle the migration is, and your guide will position your drives accordingly.

Ngorongoro Crater is one of the world's most extraordinary enclosed wildlife environments. Formed approximately 2.5 million years ago when a massive volcano collapsed inward, the caldera is 260 km² at the floor level and surrounded by walls rising 600 metres above it. Approximately 30,000 animals live permanently within the crater — a self-contained ecosystem with no need to leave. Lions, cheetahs, spotted hyenas, hippos, buffalo, zebra, elephants, and flamingos at Lake Magadi are all present. The crater is one of the most reliable places in East Africa to see black rhinos — a small but protected population moves through the open crater floor where they can be tracked by vehicle in terrain that offers unusually clear sightlines. A crater descent is among the most concentrated single-day wildlife experiences available in Africa.

Overnight on the crater rim at over 2,200 metres means cool temperatures, dramatic views over the caldera, and the best possible position for an early morning descent the next day.

Trip Highlights

  • See one of East Africa's most reliable black rhino populations on the open Ngorongoro Crater floor

Your 3-Day Serengeti & Ngorongoro Safari

  • Day
    01

    Arusha to Serengeti National Park

Your guide collects you from your Arusha hotel at dawn and drives west toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area gateway at Lodware. The road climbs through highland farmland and coffee plantations into the NCA highland plateau — on a clear day the Ngorongoro Crater rim is visible to the south. The vehicle crosses the NCA via the standard transit route and descends through montane forest to Naabi Gate, the eastern entrance to Serengeti National Park. Enter the park and begin an afternoon game drive across the Serengeti plains. The Seronera Valley — the most consistently productive game-viewing zone in the park — lies approximately 1 hour inside Naabi Gate. Here, multiple lion prides hold established territories, leopards hunt along the rocky kopjes, and large concentrations of zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, and giraffe are present year-round. A packed picnic lunch is provided inside the park. Transfer to your campsite or tented camp for dinner and overnight.

Serengeti Morning Drive — Transfer to Ngorongoro Rim

Rise early for a morning game drive in the Serengeti. The 6:00–10:00 a.m. window is the most productive time of day — lions are active on the return from the night's hunt, cheetahs begin scanning the plains, and the migrating herds start moving in the morning light. Continue the game drive with a picnic lunch inside the park before exiting via Naabi Gate in the early afternoon and driving east to the Ngorongoro crater rim (approximately 1.5–2 hours). As the vehicle climbs the rim road, the temperature drops noticeably — the crater sits at over 2,200 metres above sea level, and the highland forests that line the rim are significantly cooler than the Serengeti plains. Check in at your crater rim campsite or lodge. The evening view into the caldera as the light fades is one of the most dramatic experiences of the circuit. Dinner and overnight on the rim.

Ngorongoro Crater Descent — Return to Arusha

After an early breakfast, descend into the Ngorongoro Crater via the steep crater access track. The 600-metre descent into the caldera is itself a dramatic introduction to the day — the forest gives way to open grassland and the full scale of the enclosed ecosystem reveals itself at the bottom. Spend the morning on a game drive across the 260 km² crater floor: the resident wildlife is permanently resident with nowhere to go. Black rhinos move through the open grassland in unusually clear terrain, making the Ngorongoro Crater one of the easiest places in East Africa to photograph them. The resident lion prides, cheetahs, spotted hyenas, and elephant herds concentrate around the swamp areas and the alkaline Lake Magadi, where flamingos wade in vivid pink clusters. A picnic lunch is taken at the designated hippo pool site, where hippos surface and Nile crocodiles bask on the banks in full view. Ascend from the crater in the early afternoon and drive east to Arusha (approximately 2.5–3 hours from the crater rim) or continue to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for onward flights.
