  • Available at lodges in the evenings; limited inside parks

Overview

This Maasai Mara honeymoon safari 5 days itinerary is built around privacy, pace, and presence — a circuit through three of Kenya's most distinctive landscapes designed specifically for couples who want more than a standard group safari. You have your own vehicle and guide from the first pickup to the final drop-off. Every game drive is timed around your schedule. Meals are arranged for two, not for a group of eight.

The circuit opens in the Maasai Mara, Kenya's most celebrated reserve, where lion prides, cheetahs, and elephant herds move across 1,510 square kilometres of open savannah. Day 1 ends with a candlelit bush dinner under the stars. Day 2 gives you the Mara in full — a sunrise drive or, for the unforgettable option, a hot air balloon at dawn over the plains, followed by a picnic beside the Mara River and an evening around a private campfire. Day 3 moves north to Lake Nakuru, a soda lake in the Rift Valley where flamingos line the alkaline shore, black and white rhinos move through the acacia woodland, and Rothschild giraffes are resident year-round. A private sunset dinner overlooks the lake. Day 4 is slower — Lake Naivasha's freshwater calm, a boat drifting past hippo pods and African fish eagles, and an optional walk on Crescent Island among giraffes and wildebeest with no vehicle between you and the animals. Day 5 returns to Nairobi at leisure.

Everything in this package — game drives, accommodation, all meals, transfers, park fees, romantic extras — is included. The only significant optional upgrade is the hot air balloon safari, which remains one of the most extraordinary experiences available in East Africa.

Trip Highlights

  • Boat safari on Lake Naivasha and walking safari on Crescent Island among free-roaming giraffe and wildebeest

Your 5-Day Honeymoon Safari through Kenya's Rift Valley

  • Day
    01

Nairobi to Maasai Mara — Arrival in the Wild

Your private guide collects you from your Nairobi hotel and you drive southwest through the Rift Valley, stopping at the Great Rift Valley viewpoint to look across the valley floor and the dormant peaks of Mt. Suswa and Mt. Longonot. Arrive at your Mara lodge in time for lunch, then settle in and take the afternoon at your own pace before your first game drive at 4:00 p.m. The late-afternoon Mara is extraordinary — lion prides emerge from midday shade, cheetahs survey the plains from termite mounds, and the golden light pulls long shadows across the savannah. Return to the lodge for a private candlelit bush dinner under a sky that has no city glow to compete with. Your guide arranges the fire, the table, and the stars.

  • Day
    02

Full Day in Maasai Mara — The Mara River and the Maasai

Rise before dawn for the choice that defines this day: a sunrise game drive across the open plains as big cats return from the night's hunt, or a hot air balloon safari lifting off at first light over the Mara (available as an optional add-on — see Extra Services). Both routes eventually bring you to the Mara River, where a private picnic lunch is set up beside the water. The river holds year-round hippo pods and Nile crocodiles, and from July to October the wildebeest migration builds to the spectacle of mass river crossings. After lunch, your guide takes you to a traditional Maasai boma for a cultural visit — you meet the community elder, see inside the mud-and-thatch houses, and watch the adumu jumping dance performed by Maasai warriors. Return to camp before sunset. Your guide arranges a private campfire as evening falls, and the two of you end the day under an open Mara sky.

  • Day
    03

Maasai Mara to Lake Nakuru — Rhinos and Flamingos

After breakfast and checkout, drive north to Lake Nakuru National Park (approximately 4–5 hours), with a lunch stop en route. Arrive at your lodge — ideally positioned above or beside the lake — and check in for the afternoon. At 3:30 p.m., your guide takes you into Lake Nakuru's 188 km² of fully fenced savannah and acacia woodland. This is Kenya's most dependable park for both black and white rhinos; Rothschild giraffes, leopards, and lions are also resident. Flamingos wade the lake's alkaline shore in numbers that shift with the water's salinity — on a good day, the shoreline turns pink. As the light drops, your guide returns you to the lodge for a private sunset dinner arranged overlooking the shimmering lake surface. The evening is yours.

  • Day
    04

Lake Naivasha — Still Water and Open Ground

After breakfast, drive south to Lake Naivasha (approximately 1.5 hours). This freshwater lake sits at 1,884 metres in the Rift Valley, rimmed by yellow fever acacias and papyrus beds that shelter over 400 bird species. Check in at your lake-facing lodge, then board a private boat in the early afternoon. The boat drifts past submerged hippo pods that surface around the hull, while African fish eagles call and pelicans ride the current. For those who want to walk among the animals, Crescent Island — a private wildlife sanctuary on the lake — offers a guided walking safari where giraffes, zebras, and wildebeest move within metres of you with no vehicle between you and them. Return to the lodge for a quiet evening dinner with the lake at the window.

  • Day
    05

Lake Naivasha to Nairobi — Slow Morning, Open Road

Take breakfast at leisure with no alarm. An optional nature walk along the lake's papyrus edge is available before departure if you choose — your guide knows the bird species along the shoreline and the morning light is good for photography. Checkout by mid-morning and drive back to Nairobi (approximately 1.5–2 hours). A complimentary lunch stop at a restaurant on the road. Drop-off at your Nairobi hotel, guesthouse, or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
