Funzi Island Day Trip with Lunch and Boat Ride from Diani

1 Day

A full-day escape from Diani to Funzi Island — cruise the Ramisi River through mangrove forests, walk a tidal sandbank, feast on a Swahili seafood buffet, and explore a traditional island village with no roads or electricity.

Overview

A Funzi Island day trip from Diani takes you to one of Kenya's least-known coastal gems — a four-island archipelago 35 km south of Diani Beach, where the Ramisi River meets the Indian Ocean. No roads, no electricity, no tourist crowds. Just mangrove forests, a shifting white sandbank, and one of the most authentic Swahili communities on the Kenyan coast.

Your day starts with an early morning hotel pickup in Diani. The drive to Bodo Village takes about 45 minutes, passing coconut groves, cashew farms, and sugarcane fields along the south coast road. At Bodo Jetty, you board a speedboat and head out onto the Ramisi River.

The river cruise is the first highlight. You glide between dense mangrove forests that shelter kingfishers, herons, and — if the tide and timing are right — crocodiles lurking along the banks. The river opens into the Funzi estuary, a broad bay ringed by islands and protected by a coral reef.

Your first stop depends on the tide. At low tide, the Funzi sandbank emerges — a strip of white sand surrounded by clear turquoise water. Swim, take photos, or just stand in the middle of the Indian Ocean with no island in sight. This is the shot that makes every camera roll. When the tide allows, you continue to Funzi Island itself.

On the island, you walk through the village — around 1,500 residents from the Shirazi people, most sustaining on fishing and small-scale farming in the same way their ancestors did. Your guide explains the Swahili coastal lifestyle, Islamic traditions, and the rhythms of a community shaped entirely by the sea and the tides.

Lunch is a Swahili seafood buffet: grilled whole fish, crab, coconut rice, and tropical fruit, served on the island with the ocean breeze. After lunch, you watch a fishing demonstration with local fishermen or simply relax on the beach. You board the boat again in the early afternoon, cruise back through the Ramisi River, and your driver returns you to Diani by around 4:00 PM.

This is not a snorkelling trip — the mangrove sediment keeps the water murky — but it is one of the most complete coastal day experiences on Kenya's south coast.

Your Funzi Island Day — How the Day Unfolds

  • Day
    01

Diani → Bodo Village → Ramisi River → Funzi Sandbank → Funzi Island → Return

Your guide picks you up from your Diani hotel at 7:30 AM and drives south along the coastal road to Bodo Village — a small fishing community that serves as the departure point for Funzi Island. The 45-minute drive passes coconut groves, cashew farms, and villages where the pace of life on the Kenya south coast hasn't changed much. At Bodo Jetty, your guide gives you a briefing, and you board the speedboat.

The boat heads out onto the Ramisi River, weaving through tight mangrove channels where the forest closes in on both sides. The Ramisi estuary is rich in birdlife — kingfishers, herons, and egrets are common sightings — and crocodiles can occasionally be spotted resting along the banks. The river opens into the Funzi Bay, protected by a coral reef, with the Indian Ocean beyond.

Depending on the tide, your first stop is the Funzi sandbank — a temporary strip of white sand that surfaces at low tide and disappears when the water rises. It's one of the most photogenic spots on the Kenyan coast: flat, white, surrounded by turquoise shallows. You swim, relax, and take your time before reboarding for Funzi Island.

On the island, your guide walks you through the village and introduces you to the Shirazi community — around 1,500 people who have lived here for generations without electricity or road connections. You learn about traditional fishing methods, the role of the tides in daily life, and the Swahili coastal culture that defines this stretch of the Kenyan coast. Lunch follows: a full Swahili seafood buffet of grilled fish, crab, coconut rice, and fruit, served at a restaurant on the island. After lunch, watch a fishing demonstration by local fishermen or rest on the beach.

You board the boat by early afternoon for the return cruise through the Ramisi River. Your driver meets you at Bodo Village and transfers you back to your hotel in Diani, arriving around 4:00 PM.
