Overview

Mnemba Island sits just off the northeast coast of Zanzibar (Unguja), roughly 3 km from the shore near Matemwe — a small privately owned island surrounded by one of the finest snorkeling reefs in the Indian Ocean. The island itself is occupied exclusively by an ultra-luxury eco-resort and cannot be accessed by day visitors. What day trippers get is better: the Mnemba Atoll, a 3 km² protected marine conservation area encircling the island, where the coral is intact, the water is 15–25 metres of clear visibility, and the marine life is dense and undisturbed. At low tide, a white sandbank emerges along the atoll's edge — wide enough to walk on, calm enough to sit in ankle-deep water and look down at reef fish in the shallows.

The trip opens with a dolphin watching stop in the open ocean off Nungwi or Muyuni beach. Spinner dolphins are the most frequently seen species in Zanzibar's northern waters, sometimes travelling in large pods that surface in arcing jumps alongside the boat. Sightings are not guaranteed — these are wild animals in open ocean, and the guide will be straightforward with you about what the water is showing. When dolphins are present, the encounter is one of the most joyful wildlife experiences on the island. When they aren't, the boat continues to Mnemba and the reef more than compensates.

Snorkeling at the Mnemba Atoll typically reveals hawksbill sea turtles grazing on coral, green turtles, moray eels, octopus in the reef crevices, large grouper, parrotfish, angelfish, lionfish, barracuda, and schools of surgeonfish. The coral itself — staghorn, table, brain, and fan coral — is in healthier condition here than almost anywhere else near Zanzibar, protected by the &Beyond-managed conservation area. All snorkeling gear is provided.

On the sandbank (tide-dependent), you stop to walk the exposed white sand, eat fresh tropical fruits in the shade, and look back at both the blue of the Indian Ocean and the green interior of Mnemba Island. This is the postcard Zanzibar.

Mnemba Island Snorkeling & Dolphin Day Trip

Your hotel vehicle transfer brings you to the beach departure point at Nungwi or Muyuni. Board the boat and sail to the dolphin observation area in the open Indian Ocean off Zanzibar's northeast coast. The guide uses knowledge of the local spinner dolphin feeding and movement patterns to locate pods — when dolphins are present, the boat slows and follows at a respectful distance, allowing you to watch from the deck as the animals surface, jump, and travel alongside the hull. Wildlife behaviour is always unpredictable in the open ocean; the guide will always be honest about what the water is offering on the day.

Continue to the Mnemba Atoll conservation area, where the boat anchors on the reef edge. Your guide fits your snorkeling gear — mask, fins, and snorkel — and enters the water with you for a guided snorkel across the Mnemba reef. The atoll is one of the healthiest coral reef systems in the Zanzibar channel: hawksbill and green sea turtles are regularly seen grazing on the coral, often at arm's length; moray eels peer from the crevices; lionfish drift at mid-water; schooling fish in large formations — surgeonfish, parrotfish, angelfish, and needlefish — move through the table and staghorn coral formations below. Your guide points out species and navigates through the most active reef sections.

At low tide, the boat moves to the sandbank at the atoll's edge. The sandbank emerges as a low strip of white sand surrounded by clear, shallow water — wide enough to walk, warm enough to sit. Fresh tropical fruits are served here: sliced mango, pineapple, papaya, and coconut water. The setting is exactly what the photos promise. Snorkel a second time from the sandbank if you choose, then return to the boat.

If you selected the optional seafood lunch, the boat stops at a beach restaurant near Muyuni or Nungwi for a grilled seafood meal before the hotel return transfer. The standard package returns directly to your hotel from the beach.
