This 4-day cross-border safari from Kigali packs three of East Africa's most distinctive wildlife experiences into the most compact itinerary possible. Day 1 opens in Akagera National Park — Rwanda's only savannah park, covering 1,122 km² in eastern Rwanda along the Tanzania border, managed by African Parks since 2010. Akagera's Big Five credentials are now fully restored: lions were reintroduced in 2015, black and white rhinos have established resident populations, and elephants, buffalo, and leopards are resident year-round. Day 2 moves to Volcanoes National Park in northwestern Rwanda for golden monkey trekking. After the trek, the day continues across the Katuna/Gatuna border into Uganda and down to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.
Day 3 is the centrepiece: gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Bwindi's forest shelters approximately half the world's remaining mountain gorilla population — just over 1,000 individuals across the Bwindi-Virunga ecosystem. The one-hour encounter with a habituated gorilla family at close range is consistently described by travellers as the most powerful wildlife experience of their lives. After the trek, the route returns to Kigali the same evening via the border crossing.
Day 4 offers a Kigali city tour — an optional but well-structured programme visiting the Kigali Genocide Memorial, the Kimironko Market, the Presidential Palace Museum, and the Inema Arts Center, where Rwanda's contemporary arts scene reflects the country's extraordinary post-1994 reconstruction.
