Overview

This Tarangire Ngorongoro Crater safari 2 days itinerary pairs two of Tanzania's most distinctive wildlife environments in the shortest possible format — two parks, two game drive days, one overnight. Both destinations are within reach of Arusha in a single efficient loop, making this the most compact complete safari experience on the northern Tanzania circuit.

Day 1 is Tarangire: 2,850 km² of miombo woodland and Tarangire River savannah where the dry season concentrates some of East Africa's largest elephant herds among ancient baobab trees estimated at over 1,000 years old. Herds of 50–100 elephants are common sightings; lions, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, kudus, and oryx complete the picture. Over 550 bird species make Tarangire one of Tanzania's premier birding parks. A full-day game drive with a picnic lunch inside the park, followed by an overnight at a comfortable campsite or lodge positioned between Tarangire and Ngorongoro, prepares you for Day 2.

Day 2 is the Ngorongoro Crater: a UNESCO World Heritage Site formed approximately 2.5 million years ago when a massive volcano collapsed inward, creating a 260 km² enclosed caldera with walls rising 600 metres above the floor. Approximately 30,000 animals live permanently within the crater — a self-contained ecosystem with no need to leave. The crater offers one of the most reliable black rhino viewing environments in East Africa, alongside resident lion prides, cheetahs, spotted hyenas, hippos at the swamp, and flamingos on the alkaline Lake Magadi. A picnic lunch is served at the hippo pool site on the crater floor. After a full afternoon of game drives, the vehicle ascends the rim and returns to Arusha.

Trip Highlights

  • Full day game drive in Tarangire National Park — baobab woodland, Tarangire River, and elephant herds among the largest in East Africa
  • See lions, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, and over 550 bird species in Tarangire
  • Full Ngorongoro Crater descent — one of East Africa's most reliable locations for black rhino, lion, cheetah, and flamingo sightings
  • Picnic lunch at the hippo pool picnic site inside the Ngorongoro Crater — hippos and Nile crocodiles visible from the bank
  • All park fees included (Tarangire NP + Ngorongoro Conservation Area + Crater service fee)
  • Comfortable overnight in a campsite or budget lodge between the two parks
  • Optional pickup from Karatu for guests already based near Ngorongoro

Your 2-Day Tarangire & Ngorongoro Crater Safari

  • Day
    01

    Arusha to Tarangire National Park

After breakfast, your guide picks you up from your Arusha hotel and drives southwest to Tarangire National Park (approximately 110 minutes). Stop at the gate for park entry formalities and begin a morning game drive. Tarangire's Tarangire River is the only permanent water source in a vast area during the dry season, drawing extraordinary concentrations of wildlife — elephant herds of 50–100 animals, their skin coated in the park's red dust, move through woodland dominated by massive baobab trees. Lions and leopards hunt the riverine thicket; cheetahs watch from open grassland; giraffes browse the acacia canopy. Enjoy a picnic lunch at a designated picnic site inside the park. Continue with an afternoon game drive exploring different sections of the park before exiting and transferring to overnight accommodation in the Mto wa Mbu or Karatu area — a well-positioned base for the early Ngorongoro start on Day 2. Dinner and overnight.

Ngorongoro Crater — Return to Arusha

After breakfast, drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and descend into the crater. The access track drops 600 metres from the rim to the caldera floor — a descent through montane forest that emerges into open grassland and the full panorama of the enclosed caldera. Begin a full day game drive across the 260 km² crater floor. The resident wildlife includes: black rhinos (one of the most reliably sighted black rhino populations in East Africa, with clear sightlines across the open floor terrain), multiple resident lion prides, cheetahs, spotted hyenas, enormous buffalo herds, hippos in the permanent swamp, zebras, wildebeest, and flamingos at the alkaline Lake Magadi. Enjoy a picnic lunch at the hippo pool picnic site — hippos surface and Nile crocodiles bask on the banks in full view from the bank. Continue the afternoon game drive before ascending the crater rim at approximately 17:00–17:30 and driving back to Arusha (approximately 3.5 hours), arriving in the early evening for drop-off at your hotel.
