Overview

This 7-day Uganda safari itinerary is built around the logical geographic arc from southwestern Uganda's ancient forests to the dramatic Victoria Nile falls in the northwest — four national parks in ascending order of landscape drama, connected by a single progressive overland route from Bwindi to Murchison.

Uganda's flagship wildlife experience opens at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park: 331 km² of montane rainforest in southwestern Uganda that is the world's most important habitat for the endangered mountain gorilla. Bwindi's forest shelters approximately half of the world's remaining mountain gorilla population — estimated at just over 1,000 individuals across the Bwindi-Virunga ecosystem. Gorilla trekking at Bwindi is among the most extraordinary wildlife encounters available anywhere in Africa: a UWA ranger-guided group of eight follows a tracker team into the forest until a habituated family group is located, then spends exactly one hour with the gorillas at close range — watching silverbacks rest, juveniles play, and infants cling to their mothers, with the forest canopy closing overhead.

From Bwindi, the circuit drives north to Kasese and the Rwenzori Mountains — the Mountains of the Moon — for a nature walk at lower altitude through the park's extraordinary Afro-alpine vegetation: giant heather woodland draped in lichen, the first groundsel trees appearing at the treeline, and the endemic Rwenzori Turaco calling from the forest canopy. This is a nature walk introduction to the mountain rather than a full summit attempt, suitable for all fitness levels and offering the botanical and birdlife of the Rwenzori without the multi-day technical commitment.

Semuliki National Park follows — arguably Uganda's most overlooked gem. Semuliki is a lowland tropical rainforest at the base of the Rwenzori escarpment, representing the easternmost extension of the Congo Basin forest into East Africa. The forest harbours Central African bird species found nowhere else in Uganda or Kenya, making it one of East Africa's most significant birding destinations. The park's most visited feature is the Sempaya Hot Springs: a pair of geothermal vents — one male ("Nyasimbi") and one female ("Bitente") — where superheated water at nearly 100°C erupts in regular geyser columns from the forest floor, with eggs commonly boiled in the outflow for visitors.

The circuit concludes at Murchison Falls National Park — Uganda's largest national park at 3,893 km², where the Victoria Nile squeezes through a 7-metre gap in the Rift Valley wall and drops 45 metres in the most powerful waterfall on the Nile. A morning game drive on the north bank of the Nile targets lions, elephants, giraffes, buffalos, and the park's famous Rothschild's giraffes — one of the most endangered giraffe subspecies. The Nile boat cruise on the south bank follows the river from Paraa Landing to the base of the falls, watching hippos surface alongside the boat, Nile crocodiles bask on the banks, and African fish eagles call from the shoreline trees.

Your 7-Day Uganda Wildlife Tour

  • Day
    01

    Entebbe to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Depart Entebbe or Kampala early morning for the long drive southwest to Bwindi (approximately 8–9 hours via Masaka and Kabale, through the green hills of Kigezi — Uganda's "Switzerland"). Stop for lunch en route and arrive at your lodge near Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in the early evening. This is a transit day — use the drive time to receive the gorilla trekking briefing from your guide, who explains UWA rules (one-hour limit with the gorillas, 7-metre minimum distance, no flash photography, face masks for anyone with respiratory symptoms). Dinner and overnight

Gorilla Trekking — Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Report to the UWA ranger station at the designated time (typically 7:30–8:00 a.m.) for the trek briefing and group allocation. Groups of eight are assigned to a habituated gorilla family; trackers have been following the family since before dawn to determine its position. Trek into the forest with the ranger and porters — the duration ranges from 1 to 8 hours depending on where the gorilla family has moved overnight, averaging 3–5 hours for most groups. The forest is steep, wet, and dense — gaiters, trekking poles, and waterproof boots make a substantial difference. When the gorillas are located, the one-hour encounter begins: a fully habituated silverback may rest within metres of the group, juveniles interact, and mothers carry infants through the undergrowth. This is widely regarded as the most profound wildlife encounter available in East Africa. Return to the lodge for a late lunch, rest, and dinner. Optional: an afternoon nature walk around the park boundary forest, or a Batwa Pygmy cultural visit (additional fee).

    03

Bwindi to Rwenzori Mountains National Park

After breakfast, drive north from Bwindi toward Kasese and the Rwenzori Mountains (approximately 4–5 hours). The landscape transitions from the densely farmed Kigezi hills through the Queen Elizabeth NP corridor (possible brief wildlife viewing en route) to the flat Kasese plains below the Rwenzori Range. Stop for lunch en route. In the late afternoon, enter Rwenzori Mountains National Park for a introductory nature walk in the lower forest zone (1,615–2,000m) — the Rwenzori Turaco is commonly heard and seen here; black and white colobus monkeys move through the high canopy; the giant heather woodland begins at the upper edge of the walk. This is a brief introduction to the mountain's extraordinary vegetation rather than a full-day trek. Return to your lodge near Kasese for dinner and overnight.

  • Day
    04

Rwenzori Nature Walk — Drive to Semuliki National Park

After breakfast, re-enter Rwenzori Mountains National Park for a longer morning nature walk (approximately 3–4 hours, ascending to the upper heather and groundsel forest zone at 2,500–3,000m). The vegetation at this altitude is unlike anything in East Africa's savannah parks: tree heather shrouded in old man's beard lichen, the first giant groundsel trees (Dendrosenecio elgonensis) appearing at the valley floors, giant lobelia beginning in the bogs. Bird endemics specific to the Rwenzori — Handsome Francolin, Rwenzori Batis, and the Rwenzori Double-collared Sunbird — are targets for birders with binoculars. After the walk, drive northwest toward Fort Portal and Semuliki National Park (approximately 2–3 hours from Kasese). Check in to your lodge near the park for dinner and overnight.

  • Day
    05

Semuliki National Park — Sempaya Hot Springs and Forest Walk

Enter Semuliki National Park for a full day in one of East Africa's most distinctive ecosystems. Semuliki's lowland tropical rainforest is an eastern extension of the Congo Basin — the same forest that covers most of equatorial central Africa — making it the primary entry point in Uganda for Central African bird species not found elsewhere in the country or in Kenya. Bring binoculars: Semuliki's bird list of 400+ species includes eight species found nowhere else in Uganda, including the White-crested Hornbill, African Piculet, and Red-billed Dwarf Hornbill. The morning forest walk follows the trail to the Sempaya Hot Springs — the park's most visited feature. At "Bitente" (the female spring), a geyser of water at nearly 100°C erupts from a terracotta-coloured mound in the forest floor in a steady, hissing column of steam; at "Nyasimbi" (the male spring), the water bubbles at the surface rather than erupting vertically. The local Banyabindi community boils eggs in the outflow — typically offered to visitors. Continue the forest walk before returning to the vehicle for lunch. A game drive in the park's eastern savannah section is possible in the afternoon, where forest elephants, buffalos, and red river hogs are sometimes encountered. Dinner and overnight.

    06

Semuliki to Murchison Falls National Park — Nile Boat Cruise

After breakfast, drive northeast from Fort Portal toward Murchison Falls National Park (approximately 5–6 hours via Hoima). Arrive in the early afternoon and check in to your lodge at Paraa — the main tourism hub on the Victoria Nile at the park's centre. After lunch and a brief rest, board a launch boat at Paraa Landing for the 2-hour Nile boat cruise upstream toward the base of Murchison Falls. The Victoria Nile along this stretch is one of Uganda's most concentrated wildlife corridors: hippo pods number in the hundreds and surface constantly along both banks; Nile crocodiles reach exceptional sizes and bask at the water's edge; African fish eagles perch in the fig trees overhead; shoebill storks are occasionally spotted in the papyrus swamps of the north bank. The cruise ends at the base of the falls — where the entire Victoria Nile squeezes through a 7-metre gap in the Rift Valley wall and drops 45 metres in a continuous thunder of white water. Return by boat to Paraa for dinner and overnight.

Murchison Falls Game Drive — Return to Entebbe

Rise early for a morning game drive on the north bank of the Victoria Nile — Murchison Falls' most productive game-viewing zone. Murchison Falls is home to Uganda's largest elephant population, resident lion prides, Rothschild's giraffes (one of the world's most endangered giraffe subspecies, successfully conserved here), buffalos, Uganda kobs, oribi, and hartebeest. The open savannah and riverine woodland make for excellent visibility. Optional: a 45-minute walk to the top of Murchison Falls (USD 15/person) — the point where the Nile is forced through the 7-metre gap directly below your feet. After the morning game drive and a packed lunch, begin the drive back to Entebbe or Kampala (approximately 5–6 hours via Masindi and Kampala). Drop-off at Entebbe International Airport or your Kampala hotel.
