Getting to South Africa

Routes, airlines, and flight times from Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the Americas.

Johannesburg's OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) is South Africa's primary international hub and the best entry point for most travellers. Cape Town International Airport (CPT) receives a growing number of direct long-haul services and is the better choice if Cape Town is your main destination. Once in South Africa, a well-connected domestic network links Johannesburg to Cape Town, Kruger, Durban, and the Garden Route gateway of George in under two hours.

From EuropeLondon, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Paris
~10–12 hrs direct
Main Routes LHR / FRA / AMS / CDG → JNB or CPT
Airlines British Airways, Lufthansa, KLM, Air France, Virgin Atlantic
Frequency Daily direct services from all major hubs
London Heathrow to Johannesburg is approximately 11 hours direct. Both British Airways and Virgin Atlantic operate seasonal direct services to Cape Town — flying in directly saves a domestic connection and is worth it if the fare difference is reasonable. KLM from Amsterdam connects to Johannesburg daily in around 11 hours. Air France from Paris operates direct to Johannesburg in approximately 11 hours 30 minutes.
Booking tip: Book 8–12 weeks ahead for the best fares on European routes. Summer school holidays (July–August) and the December–January peak are the most expensive periods. Shoulder season travel in March–May or September–November offers significantly better value.
From the Middle EastDubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi
~8–10 hrs direct
Main Routes DXB / DOH / AUH → JNB or CPT
Airlines Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad
Frequency Daily direct services from Dubai and Doha
Emirates operates daily direct from Dubai to both Johannesburg (approximately 8 hours 30 minutes) and Cape Town (approximately 10 hours, seasonal). Qatar Airways connects daily from Doha to Johannesburg in around 8 hours 30 minutes. Etihad operates from Abu Dhabi in approximately 9 hours. The Middle East carriers offer some of the best inflight products on this route — particularly Emirates and Qatar in Business Class.
Booking tip: Qatar's Qsuites Business Class is widely regarded as the best on this corridor. Worth comparing fares if you are considering a business class upgrade. Emirates allows a Dubai stopover, which many travellers use to break the journey.
From AsiaSingapore, Hong Kong, Mumbai
~9–14 hrs direct
Main Routes SIN / HKG / BOM → JNB
Airlines Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Air India, Emirates via DXB
Frequency Multiple weekly direct; daily via Dubai hub
Singapore Airlines operates a direct service from Singapore to Johannesburg in approximately 13 hours. Cathay Pacific connects from Hong Kong in approximately 13 hours 30 minutes. From Mumbai, Air India and other carriers connect in around 9 hours 30 minutes. Most Asian cities also have excellent connections via Dubai or Doha if a direct service is not available or not competitive on price.
Booking tip: Singapore Airlines' direct service is consistently well-reviewed for product quality. Book 10–14 weeks ahead. Travelling via a Middle East hub adds 2–4 hours but often opens significantly cheaper fare options.
From the AmericasNew York, São Paulo, Miami
~8–16 hrs
Main Routes JFK / GRU / MIA → JNB direct or via hub
Airlines Delta, LATAM, South African Airways (seasonal), Emirates via DXB
Frequency Daily via hub; seasonal direct from New York
New York to Johannesburg is approximately 15 to 16 hours. Delta operates a direct service (seasonal) and connections via European or Middle East hubs are available year-round. From São Paulo, LATAM operates a direct service in approximately 8 hours 30 minutes — one of the shortest intercontinental routes to South Africa given proximity across the South Atlantic. Miami connects via Europe or the Middle East in approximately 18 hours total.
Booking tip: North American travellers often find better value routing via a Middle East hub (Emirates, Qatar, Etihad) than on direct or European-hub services. TripGenius compares routing options across all hubs when building your package.

Domestic connections from Johannesburg: JNB → Cape Town (CPT) approximately 2 hours | JNB → Kruger Mpumalanga (MQP) approximately 1 hour | JNB → Durban (DUR) approximately 1 hour | JNB → George (GRG, Garden Route) approximately 1 hour 30 minutes.
