Getting to the UK from Nairobi

The UK is one of the most popular long-haul destinations for Kenyan travellers — and the route from Nairobi is well-served. Kenya Airways operates a direct flight from JKIA to London Heathrow, which remains one of the most significant long-haul routes out of East Africa. Most travellers fly into London Heathrow (LHR) or London Gatwick (LGW), with Edinburgh (EDI) and Manchester (MAN) also reachable via connection if the north is your starting point.

Economy and Business class (Pride Business) both available. For many travellers, flying KQ direct is a point of pride as much as a practical choice. Baggage allowance is generous.
British Airways has operated the Nairobi–London route historically and may offer direct or connecting services depending on current scheduling. Flying BA into Heathrow gives you the full British experience from the moment you board. Business class on BA's long-haul product is excellent.
Emirates connects through Dubai to London Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham, and Edinburgh. An excellent option if the direct KQ flight is sold out, if you want to start your UK trip from a city other than London, or if you are already flying Emirates for another leg of a wider itinerary.

Entry Requirements for the United Kingdom
What Kenyan travellers need to know — including the UK's updated electronic travel authorisation system.
Kenyan passport holders require a UK Standard Visitor Visa applied for online through the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) portal; biometrics are submitted at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) in Nairobi. A successful application grants permission to stay for up to 6 months. Processing typically takes 15–21 working days for a standard application. Apply a minimum of 8–10 weeks before your travel date. The application fee is currently GBP 115.
Important: The UK is not part of the Schengen Area. A UK visa does not give you entry to Europe, and a Schengen visa does not give you entry to the UK. They are completely separate applications.
Your passport must be valid for the entire length of your intended stay in the UK. The UK does not require 6 months of validity beyond departure — only that it covers your visit. However, airlines routinely apply the 6-month rule at check-in, so 6 months validity from your return date is the safe standard. Ensure you have at least one blank page for entry stamps.
A UK Standard Visitor Visa application typically requires: completed online application form, your passport (and previous passports if applicable), biometric enrolment at the VAC in Nairobi, proof of travel itinerary and hotel bookings, 6 months of bank statements demonstrating sufficient funds, proof of employment, business ownership, or other ties to Kenya, a cover letter explaining the purpose of your visit, and evidence of property ownership or other financial commitments in Kenya. The UK Home Office assesses applications holistically.
The UK introduced an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system for visitors from countries that do not require a visa to enter the UK. As Kenyan passport holders require a full UK Visitor Visa, the ETA does not apply to you — your visa covers your entry authorisation. No separate ETA application is needed.

Cards and contactless payments are accepted almost everywhere, including on London buses and the Underground. Cash is rarely needed but useful to carry a small amount for markets, tips, and smaller establishments. Avoid exchanging currency at hotel desks or airport kiosks — rates are poor.
Summer (May–September) is the most reliable for weather — long days, outdoor events, and the country at its most active. June and July are particularly good. Spring (April–May) is beautiful with flowers and fewer crowds than peak summer. Autumn (September–October) has crisp weather and turning leaves in the countryside. Winter is cold and grey but London at Christmas is genuinely magical, and Edinburgh in December has a famous market. Summer school holidays (late July–August) are the busiest and most expensive — book well ahead.
The UK Home Office rejects a significant number of visitor visa applications — not because applicants are dishonest, but because the application does not adequately demonstrate that the person intends to return home after their visit.
