Beyond Ordinary Travel
A Lake Nakuru National Park safari combines spectacular flamingo spectacles with excellent Big Five game viewing. The park covers 188 square kilometres in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley, centred on the shallow alkaline Lake Nakuru. It is one of Africa’s most important sanctuaries for both black and white rhino, and the park is fully fenced to protect these endangered animals. The Lake Nakuru National Park safari delivers some of the most reliable rhino sightings in East Africa. Flamingos — both lesser and greater — congregate on the lake in vast pink flocks, though numbers fluctuate seasonally as they move between Rift Valley lakes. Lion, leopard, buffalo, Rothschild giraffe, and waterbuck are commonly seen in the acacia woodlands and open grasslands surrounding the lake. The Out of Africa viewpoint, made famous by the 1985 film, sits on a ridge above the park and provides a panoramic view of the lake and surrounding escarpment. Birdlife exceeds 450 species. Lake Nakuru National Park safari is accessible by road from Nairobi in approximately 2.5 hours, making it a popular first or second night stop on a longer Rift Valley circuit.
