Minarets, hot air balloons, thermal pools, and a city that sits across two continents. Turkey doesn't do ordinary.

Getting to Turkey from Nairobi
Around six hours in the air. One of the shortest European-region routes you can take from JKIA.
Turkey is one of the most accessible non-African international destinations from Nairobi. Turkish Airlines flies direct from JKIA to Istanbul — no connection, no layover, straight in. That alone makes it stand out among European and Middle Eastern destinations. Most travellers enter through Istanbul Airport (IST), which is one of the busiest and best-connected airports in the world.
The standout option and the one most travellers choose. Turkish Airlines flies daily and direct from Nairobi to Istanbul. The airline consistently ranks among the world's best for long-haul service, and Istanbul Airport (IST) is a stunning, modern facility in its own right. Economy and Business class both available. In-flight catering is notably good for an economy product.
A solid alternative if Turkish Airlines is fully booked or pricing high on a particular travel date. Dubai is an efficient transit hub and the DXB–IST route is well-served. Total journey time is longer than flying direct with TK but the combination is reliable.
Ethiopian connects through Addis Ababa to Istanbul. Not the fastest routing, but often one of the more affordable options — worth comparing against Turkish Airlines direct when budget is the primary consideration.
Qatar Airways is a premium option connecting through Doha's Hamad International Airport. Consistently rated among the world's best airlines. A good choice if you are travelling in Business or Premium Economy and want a high-quality experience end to end.
If you're planning to see more of Turkey beyond Istanbul, domestic flights are affordable and frequent. Istanbul to Cappadocia (Kayseri or Nevşehir airports) takes about 1.5 hours. Istanbul to Antalya for the Turquoise Coast takes about 1.5 hours. Turkish Airlines and its low-cost subsidiary AnadoluJet cover the country extensively. We'll build your domestic legs into the itinerary.
Entry Requirements for Turkey
What Kenyan travellers need to know before they fly.
Kenyan passport holders must obtain a Turkish e-Visa before travelling. The process is entirely online through the official Turkish e-Visa portal, takes about 10 minutes, and is typically approved within 24–72 hours. The e-Visa allows up to 30 days for tourism and costs USD 50 (payable by card). Apply at least one week before travel. The official portal is evisa.gov.tr — beware third-party sites charging inflated fees.
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry into Turkey. Ensure you have at least one blank page available for the entry stamp.
Turkish immigration may ask for proof of a return or onward ticket. Carry your booking confirmation in print or on your phone. This is standard practice and rarely causes issues, but be prepared.
Hotel booking confirmations or an invitation letter from a host are advisable. Immigration officers occasionally request these, particularly if your visit is longer than 10 days.
The Turkish Lira has fluctuated significantly in recent years, which works in favour of most international visitors — your USD or KES stretches further than it might appear. Cards are widely accepted in Istanbul and tourist areas. Carry cash for bazaars, local transport, and smaller towns. Exchange at banks or official offices, not airport desks for large amounts. ATMs are widely available.
Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–November) are the sweet spots. Temperatures are comfortable, crowds are thinner, and prices are lower than peak summer. Summer (July–August) is hot, busy, and expensive — particularly on the coast and in Cappadocia. Winter in Istanbul is mild and atmospheric; Cappadocia in winter can be magical with snow but flights can be disrupted.
Hot air balloon flights over Cappadocia are one of the most photographed experiences in the world — and they are genuinely spectacular. However, they are weather-dependent and can be cancelled at short notice, including on the morning of the flight. This is normal and the operators are experienced. If Cappadocia is on your list, build at least two mornings into your schedule there to give yourself the best chance of flying. We'll factor this into your itinerary.
