Kenya to South Africa — TripGenius

Getting to South Africa from Nairobi

Airlines, routes, and flight times from JKIA — including the quickest and most affordable options.

There are no direct flights from Nairobi to South Africa. Every routing requires one connection, typically through a Middle Eastern or African hub. The most common entry points are Johannesburg OR Tambo International (JNB) — the main hub for Kruger, the Winelands, and onward domestic connections — and Cape Town International (CPT) if that is your primary destination. Flight times from Nairobi are manageable: 6 to 9 hours depending on the airline and layover.

Kenya AirwaysNBO → JNB direct
~4 hrs 30 min
Route NBO → JNB (Johannesburg OR Tambo)
Flight Time Approximately 4 hours 30 minutes
Frequency Multiple weekly — check KQ for current schedule
Kenya Airways is the most convenient option for most Nairobi travellers — a direct, non-stop service to Johannesburg with no layover. The flight is short enough to be comfortable in Economy, and KQ's product on this route is reliable. Flying KQ also avoids the long transit times associated with Middle Eastern hub routings. If Johannesburg is your entry point, this is the first-choice airline.
Booking tip: Kenya Airways often runs promotional fares on this route. Book 6–10 weeks ahead for the best pricing. For travel during school holidays (August and December–January), book further in advance — seats fill quickly. KQ allows M-Pesa payment when booking directly through their website.
South African AirwaysNBO → JNB direct (seasonal)
~4 hrs 30 min
Route NBO → JNB (Johannesburg OR Tambo)
Flight Time Approximately 4 hours 30 minutes
Frequency Seasonal — check SAA for current availability
South African Airways operates a direct NBO–JNB service seasonally. When available, it is a solid alternative to Kenya Airways on the same corridor — comparable flight times, comparable comfort. Check availability and compare fares against KQ before booking, as pricing fluctuates between the two carriers on the same route.
Booking tip: SAA availability on this route varies by season. TripGenius checks both KQ and SAA when putting together your package and recommends whichever gives the better combination of fare, timing, and connection.
EmiratesNBO → DXB → JNB or CPT
~13–15 hrs total
Route NBO → DXB → JNB / CPT
Flight Time 13–15 hours total including Dubai connection
Frequency Daily NBO–DXB; multiple DXB–JNB and DXB–CPT daily
Emirates connects through Dubai to both Johannesburg and Cape Town. The journey time is longer than Kenya Airways' direct service, but Emirates' product quality is consistently high — particularly useful if you are travelling in Business Class or want a more premium experience. Flying into Cape Town directly via Dubai is a good option if you want to avoid a domestic connection on arrival.
Booking tip: The Dubai layover can be extended into a stopover if you want to spend a night in Dubai before continuing to South Africa. TripGenius can build this as a multi-destination package. Compare the Emirates fare against KQ direct — on this routing, KQ is usually faster and often cheaper in Economy.
Qatar AirwaysNBO → DOH → JNB
~13–15 hrs total
Route NBO → DOH → JNB
Flight Time 13–15 hours total including Doha connection
Frequency Daily NBO–DOH; multiple DOH–JNB daily
Qatar Airways connects through Hamad International Airport in Doha — one of the world's best transit airports. The QR product is excellent, particularly in Business Class (Qsuites). This routing makes more sense for travellers prioritising comfort over speed, or for those who need to connect from Doha for other reasons. Total journey time is comparable to Emirates via Dubai.
Booking tip: If you are considering Business Class for this trip, Qatar's Qsuites are widely regarded as the best product flying into South Africa from Kenya. Compare Qatar Business against Emirates Business — both are strong, but QR often has competitive introductory pricing when booked early.

Domestic connections from Johannesburg: JNB → Cape Town (CPT) approximately 2 hours | JNB → Kruger Mpumalanga (MQP) approximately 1 hour | JNB → Durban (DUR) approximately 1 hour | JNB → George (GRG, Garden Route gateway) approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. TripGenius books your full routing — NBO to South Africa and all onward domestic legs — as a single coordinated package.

Entry Requirements for Kenyan Travellers

What you need to carry — and what you do not need to worry about.

No Visa Required for Kenyan Passport Holders

Kenya and South Africa have a bilateral visa-free agreement. Kenyan passport holders receive a free 30-day visitor's permit on arrival at any South African international airport — OR Tambo Johannesburg, Cape Town International, or King Shaka Durban. No advance application. No embassy visit. No fee at the border. You arrive, show your passport and return ticket, and you are in.

Valid Kenyan passport — minimum 30 days beyond return date
6 months validity is strongly recommended. Airlines enforce passport validity strictly at JKIA check-in — if your passport expires within 6 months of your travel date, renew it before booking. Ensure you have at least two blank pages for the South African entry stamp.

Required for Kruger — not required elsewhere

Travelling with children? South Africa requires an unabridged birth certificate for any minor entering the country. If a child is travelling with only one parent, or with a guardian, a signed parental consent affidavit from the absent parent is also required. This catches many families off guard at the airport — do not leave without it. TripGenius provides a complete child travel documentation checklist for all families booking with us.
