Mikumi National Park sits in central Tanzania, approximately 283 km west of Dar es Salaam in the Kilosa district, and forms the northern edge of the vast Selous-Mikumi-Nyerere ecosystem — one of Africa’s largest continuous wildlife areas. At approximately 3,230 km², Mikumi is among Tanzania’s larger national parks and one of the most accessible from the Indian Ocean coast by air. For Zanzibar-based visitors, a morning flight puts you in the park by 8:30 a.m. for a full day of game drives and returns you to the island by early evening — a complete bush experience without leaving your beach holiday by a single night.

Mikumi’s defining landscape is the Mkata Floodplain: a large open grassland where wildlife concentrates visibly year-round. Elephants are the most frequently encountered large mammal — herds of 20–60 individuals graze the floodplain throughout the day. Lions are regularly sighted on the open grassland and along the seasonal luggas (dry riverbeds) that bisect the plain. Masai giraffes, common zebras, blue wildebeest, impala, and eland are resident in the thousands across the open savannah. Mikumi is one of Tanzania’s most reliable parks for hippo observation: the Hippo Pool — a permanent waterhole in the southern section of the park — holds a resident pod of hippos visible from the bank year-round, alongside Nile crocodiles.

Leopards and African wild dogs are present (Mikumi is part of the broader ecosystem that includes Nyerere NP, Tanzania’s largest wild dog stronghold), though both are less reliably sighted than the plains game. The park holds over 400 bird species including the southern ground hornbill, lilac-breasted roller, bateleur eagle, and secretary bird.

This is a single full-day return trip from Zanzibar by domestic flight. Hotel pickup is at approximately 6:30 a.m. for a 7:45 a.m. departure from Zanzibar Airport. The flight lands at the Mikumi airstrip at approximately 8:30 a.m. Game drives run from arrival until 14:30, when the vehicle returns to the airstrip. The 15:00 return flight reaches Zanzibar at approximately 15:45–16:00. Hotel drop-off is estimated 5:00–6:30 p.m. depending on your hotel location. Raincoats are available from the guide if needed.

Day 01 :

Zanzibar — Mikumi National Park — Zanzibar

Your hotel vehicle transfer collects you at approximately 6:30 a.m. for the airport drive. Board the domestic aircraft at 7:45 a.m. for the approximately 45-minute flight southwest across the Zanzibar channel and the Tanzanian mainland to the Mikumi bush airstrip. Arrive at approximately 8:30 a.m. and begin the game drive immediately — your guide is waiting at the airstrip.

The game drive opens on the Mkata Floodplain, the park’s central open grassland where wildlife is visible without the need for long tracking. Elephant herds of 20–60 animals commonly graze in the open, sometimes crossing the park road at close range. Masai giraffes, Burchell’s zebras, and blue wildebeest are in constant view across the plain; impalas and warthogs are resident throughout. Your guide routes toward the Hippo Pool — a permanent waterhole in the park’s southern zone where a resident hippo pod surfaces throughout the day alongside Nile crocodiles on the adjacent mudbank. The surrounding vegetation attracts lion prides that use the waterhole as a hunting station. Continue through the park’s varied habitat zones — acacia savannah, seasonal luggas, and miombo woodland edges — in pursuit of the resident lion groups, leopards (less frequently sighted), and the park’s outstanding birdlife.

At 13:00, stop inside the park for the bush lunch: a warm prepared meal served in the field with fresh tropical juices. Continue the afternoon game drive until 14:30, when the vehicle returns to the Mikumi airstrip. Board the 15:00 return flight and arrive back in Zanzibar at approximately 15:45–16:00.
