A full-day escape from Diani to Funzi Island — cruise the Ramisi River through mangrove forests, walk a tidal sandbank, feast on a Swahili seafood buffet, and explore a traditional island village with no roads or electricity.
Overview
A Funzi Island day trip from Diani takes you to one of Kenya’s least-known coastal gems — a four-island archipelago 35 km south of Diani Beach, where the Ramisi River meets the Indian Ocean. No roads, no electricity, no tourist crowds. Just mangrove forests, a shifting white sandbank, and one of the most authentic Swahili communities on the Kenyan coast.
Your day starts with an early morning hotel pickup in Diani. The drive to Bodo Village takes about 45 minutes, passing coconut groves, cashew farms, and sugarcane fields along the south coast road. At Bodo Jetty, you board a speedboat and head out onto the Ramisi River.
The river cruise is the first highlight. You glide between dense mangrove forests that shelter kingfishers, herons, and — if the tide and timing are right — crocodiles lurking along the banks. The river opens into the Funzi estuary, a broad bay ringed by islands and protected by a coral reef.
Your first stop depends on the tide. At low tide, the Funzi sandbank emerges — a strip of white sand surrounded by clear turquoise water. Swim, take photos, or just stand in the middle of the Indian Ocean with no island in sight. This is the shot that makes every camera roll. When the tide allows, you continue to Funzi Island itself.
On the island, you walk through the village — around 1,500 residents from the Shirazi people, most sustaining on fishing and small-scale farming in the same way their ancestors did. Your guide explains the Swahili coastal lifestyle, Islamic traditions, and the rhythms of a community shaped entirely by the sea and the tides.
Lunch is a Swahili seafood buffet: grilled whole fish, crab, coconut rice, and tropical fruit, served on the island with the ocean breeze. After lunch, you watch a fishing demonstration with local fishermen or simply relax on the beach. You board the boat again in the early afternoon, cruise back through the Ramisi River, and your driver returns you to Diani by around 4:00 PM.
This is not a snorkelling trip — the mangrove sediment keeps the water murky — but it is one of the most complete coastal day experiences on Kenya’s south coast.
